Winter the Dolphin at Clearwater Marine Aquarium

Our family went to see Winter the Dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Our daughter held a prosthetic tail like Winter wears! It was hard to get a good picture of Winter, as she was busy watching the divers clean the tank.  We also enjoyed seeing a young dolphin who was recently rescued, Hope, play with a barrel. She kept trying to get it to the surface – very clever and lots of fun to watch.

The Aquarium has rescued turtles, otters, dolphins, nurse sharks and other assorted creatures, and many live at the aquarium permanently due to their injuries. The Aquarium was very nice and super busy, as many people are going to see Winter; we will return again for a behind the scenes tour! Well worth the visit!

If you are not familiar with Winter’s story, she was found injured and then rescued by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium several years ago.  She lost her tail due to her injuries and later learned to swim with a prosthetic tail.  While figuring out how to fit a prosthetic device on the sensitive skin of a dolphin, new technologies were created that are now being used with many war veterans.

There is a great book about Winter,  Winter’s Tail:  How One Little Dolphin Learned to Swim Again, and a popular movie, Dolphin Tale, that is based on her story.

She is an inspiration to millions of people!  We love her story.
